The LGBT Opportunity

In Matthew 14:22-31 we read about Jesus coming to the disciples, who are in a boat, by walking on the water. Peter, caught up in the glory of the moment, says, “Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water”. Jesus says one word, “Come”. Peter steps over the edge of the boat, places his feet on the water, and begins walking to Jesus. You have to admire his adventurous spirit and accomplishment. But then he feels the howling wind and sees the choppiness of the waves and begins to sink. For a moment he forgets who is in charge and fears drowning in the sea. Alarmed he cries out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus “immediately” reaches out his hand, pulls him up, and says, “You of little-faith, why did you doubt?” He seems to be asking, “Peter, do you really think I cannot handle a storm?”

We are often like Peter. One moment we are amazed by the greatness of Jesus and feel that with him we can do anything; the next we feel overwhelmed by the things that concern or threaten us. This can become our feeling as we observe the ideology of the LGBT movement flooding into our public school system and into mainstream thinking. We feel that our children are under threat, our society is falling from God even more and that truth is being lost.

Do we really think that the Lord of the universe is wringing his hands in heaven, surprised by this turn of events? Not so. He is giving us an opportunity to believe his power and to walk on water. We must remember that the light shines brightest in the dark and that hope is most attractive to those in despair. So, if we feel like we are sinking let’s do as Peter did and cry out, “Lord, save us”. He is able. Easily able.
